Barbaresco Anthology 2012
The 2012 Antologia Barbaresco is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) red wine produced by Cantina Terre del Barolo. Founded in 1958 in Castiglione Falletto, Terre del Barolo is one of the largest cooperatives in the area, uniting around 300 members and over 600 hectares across all eleven Barolo municipalities. This cooperative model historically provides access to valuable grapes from numerous small winegrowers gathered under a single producer. The wine is made exclusively from pure Nebbiolo, an Italian top grape predominantly cultivated in the Piedmont region.
The wine originates from Barbaresco, a classic Nebbiolo area located in the Langhe hills east of Alba in northwestern Italy. According to the producer, the grapes for this specific wine are sourced from a zone that includes the entire territory of the municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso, Neive, and a part of Alba. Piedmont is a prestigious wine region surrounded by the Alps, renowned for its dramatic, steep hills. These hills are often enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, which protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period. The 2012 vintage in this region achieved a score of 90 points and is described as fresh and balanced.
While Terre del Barolo is deeply rooted in the Barolo zone, drawing on a broad geographical coverage that reflects a cross-section of the local terroir mosaic, this Barbaresco represents the neighboring appellation. Barbaresco is traditionally recognized as a counterpart to Barolo, sharing the same dedication to the Nebbiolo grape and the region's profound focus on how soil and microclimate influence the wine. Piedmont itself is celebrated globally for its deep connection to local gastronomy, including the famous white truffles from Alba and rich local dishes. The wine is bottled at 14% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
