Terre del Barolo Barolo Bersano 1971
The Terre del Barolo Barolo Bersano from the 1971 vintage is a classic Italian red wine. Classified as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), it is produced exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape. The fruit is sourced from the Terre del Barolo vineyards, which are designated on the label as a "Zona Pregiata" or prestigious zone. The wine was bottled directly within the production area and has an alcohol content of 13.50%.
This wine originates from Piedmont, a highly esteemed region in northwestern Italy whose name translates to "at the foot of the mountain." Encircled by the Alps, the region is characterized by dramatic, steep hills, particularly in the Langhe subregion. During autumn, thick morning fog frequently envelops these hills, protecting the grapes and facilitating a long, perfect ripening process. The 1971 vintage in this region achieved a score of 94 points and is recognized for its elegant character.
Within Piedmont lies Barolo, located southwest of Alba. It is one of the most prestigious wine areas in the region and is globally celebrated for producing some of Italy's greatest classic red wines. The area is deeply connected to Nebbiolo, an Italian top-tier grape variety known for creating elegant wines with significant structural depth.
The Bersano estate was founded in 1907 by Giuseppe Bersano in Nizza Monferrato. Following the acquisition of the Cremosina vineyard in 1912, the house expanded significantly. From 1935, Giuseppe's son, Arturo Bersano, took the estate to the global market, establishing its international reputation. Today, Bersano encompasses over 230 hectares across ten estates in Langhe and Monferrato. The winery is now guided by the Massimelli family, with Federica Massimelli stepping in as the first female leader in 2021. The estate's historical dedication to its terroir is reflected in Arturo Bersano's original motto: "Bersano wines, Bersano vineyards, a guarantee of lands and men."
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
