Beaune Premier Cru Joseph Drouhin 1997
Burgundy, located in eastern France, was shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the area's countless terroirs. The region cultivates almost exclusively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, turning terroir into an art form with its finely meshed system of climats and limestone soils. The 1997 vintage from this area achieved a score of 86 points and is described as charming, but quickly developed.
Beaune is situated in the heart of the Côte de Beaune and serves as the historical trade center for the entire Burgundy region. The area encompasses 42 Premier Cru Climats spread across limestone and clay soils on slopes at altitudes between 220 and 300 meters. While the appellation produces both red and white wines, red wine heavily dominates. Beaune is also widely recognized as the home of the annual Hospices de Beaune auction. This specific Premier Cru is an estate harvest, officially designated as Récolte du Domaine, and was bottled directly by Joseph Drouhin.
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most highly regarded wine houses. Still family-owned in its fourth generation, the house operates both extensive négociant activities and large proprietary vineyards, making it one of the most complete actors in the region. The estate covers over 80 hectares throughout Burgundy, with a strong concentration in the Côte d'Or. Joseph Drouhin is biodynamically driven and has been a quiet yet consistent advocate for organic viticulture in a region where traditional practices have often persisted. The family has also expanded their winemaking endeavors to the United States, establishing Domaine Drouhin Oregon in the Willamette Valley in 1987.
