Haut-Carles Fronsac Château de Carles 2012
Produced by S.C.E.V. Chateau de Carles under the guidance of Constance and Stéphane Droulers, the Haut-Carles 2012 is a Grand Vin de Bordeaux classified as Appellation Fronsac Contrôlée. This red wine is bottled directly at the château and represents the classic winemaking traditions of its origin.
The wine hails from Fronsac, located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, west of Libourne, nestled between the Isle and Dordogne rivers. The 2012 vintage in this area is characterized as light and balanced, achieving a score of 89 points. Bordeaux itself sits along the Atlantic coast and stands as the world's most famous wine region, with a history of exporting wine that dates back to the Middle Ages. While the Left Bank is known for its gravel soils, the Right Bank is the traditional domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Fronsac gained its AOC status in 1937 and today covers approximately 770 hectares across seven communes, hosting around 100 producers. The local terroir is defined by the hilly slopes around Tertre de Fronsac, where the soils are a distinct mixture of limestone, sandstone, and clay. The appellation exclusively produces red wines, heavily dominated by Merlot, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of the plantings. This is typically supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Malbec. Historically, Fronsac is recognized as one of Bordeaux's finest value alternatives to the prestigious neighboring areas of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.
