Bourgogne Aligoté Georges Duboeuf 1994
The 1994 Bourgogne Aligoté is a white wine produced by Georges Duboeuf. Born in 1933 into a family of winegrowers in the Mâconnais, Duboeuf founded his own trading house in 1964 in the heart of Beaujolais. He became widely known as 'le roi du Beaujolais' for his rare talent in both wine quality and marketing. Duboeuf gathered wines from hundreds of small growers and took pride in highlighting individual crus. He was instrumental in turning Beaujolais Nouveau into a global phenomenon. Although he passed away in 2020, the house is carried on by his son Franck and remains a defining voice in the region's modern identity.
This wine originates from the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation, a regional Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée established in 1937. The classification covers a vast geographical area across the Côte-d'Or, Yonne, Saône-et-Loire, and Rhône departments in eastern France. Burgundy's viticultural landscape was historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the countless terroirs. The region experiences a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, and the vineyards are generally characterized by classic soils of limestone, marl, and clay. The 1994 vintage in this area is recorded as an uneven and difficult year.
Bottled at 12.5% alcohol, this wine is made exclusively from Aligoté, one of Burgundy's oldest traditional grape varieties. While Chardonnay dominates most other white wine appellations in the region, the Bourgogne Aligoté AOC was created specifically to showcase this distinct variety. Historically, wines from this appellation have served as a regional alternative to Burgundy's more geographically restricted village and cru classifications.
