This is the 1983 Cuvée des Dames de Vergy from Domaine Dominique Guyon, an Appellation Contrôlée wine originating from the Hautes Côtes de Nuits in France. The wine was estate bottled, as indicated by the "mis en bouteille au domaine" designation. The 1983 vintage in this area received a score of 85 points; while the year was generally uneven, good bottles can still be found from top producers.
The wine is produced in the renowned Burgundy region in eastern France, an area historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs. Burgundy has elevated terroir to an art form with its intricate system of climats. Stretching from Chablis in the north to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south, the region's limestone soils are the foundation for its wine production, which focuses almost exclusively on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The Hautes Côtes de Nuits is a regional AOC covering the high-altitude hinterland west of the classic Côte de Nuits, situated between 300 and 400 meters above sea level. Granted AOC status in 1961, the area encompasses approximately 800 hectares of vineyards spread across 16 communes. Due to its altitude and western exposure, the climate here is cooler and more humid than the neighboring slopes, resulting in a later ripening period. The vineyards are planted on soils consisting of chalk and clay over a limestone bedrock, often featuring a shallower depth and higher clay content than the prestigious slopes of the Côte d'Or. The area is recognized as a quality-oriented source of Burgundy wines and is home to an increasing number of ambitious producers who benefit from the positive effects of climate change on these higher-elevation vineyards.

Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.

Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
