Western Cape Bay View 2006
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Western Cape
The Western Cape is South Africa's most important wine province and covers virtually all of the country's quality wine production under the overarching Wine of Origin (WO) Western Cape designation. The area stretches from Cape Town and is home to districts such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Constantia, Swartland, Walker Bay, Elgin, Hemel-en-Aarde, Robertson, Olifants River and Cederberg.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm dry summers and humid winters, moderated by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans as well as cool sea winds such as the Cape Doctor. The soils range from granite and shale to sandstone, limestone and clay. Chenin Blanc is the province's signature grape and represents the world's largest planting of the variety, with significant areas of old bush vines, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and the South African crossing Pinotage (Pinot Noir × Cinsault), as well as cool-climate Pinot Noir from Walker Bay and Elgin. The style ranges from fresh, mineral whites with citrus, peach, apple, tropical fruit and honey, to full-bodied reds with ripe dark berries, spices, smoky character and firm tannins. The area is known as South Africa's wine heart, with traditions dating back to 1685, and home to the classic dessert wine Vin de Constance from Constantia.
