Cabernet Sauvignon Buena Vista 1982
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Sonoma
Sonoma County lies north of San Francisco in the northern part of California between the Mayacamas mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The area covers around 63,000 acres of vineyard spread across 19 AVAs and accounts for about 6 percent of California's total wine production.
The climate varies markedly between cool coastal zones and warmer inland valleys, where the characteristic morning fog from the Pacific pushes in through the Russian River and Petaluma Gap and cools the vineyards. The soils are highly varied with volcanic, alluvial and sedimentary types, where the famous Goldridge sandy loam in the Russian River Valley is particularly suited to Pinot Noir. Chardonnay is the most planted grape, followed by Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Merlot. Key AVAs include Russian River Valley (cool, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), Sonoma Coast (the largest, cool coastal region), Los Carneros (cool, Pinot/Chardonnay and sparkling), Dry Creek Valley (Zinfandel), Alexander Valley (Cabernet) and Petaluma Gap. The wines range from slender, acid-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with cherry, raspberry, citrus and minerality, to full-bodied Cabernet and Zinfandel with ripe dark berries, spices and soft tannins. The area is known as one of the United States' most diverse and quality-focused wine regions.
