Carema Produttori di Carema 1976
The 1976 Carema from Produttori di Carema is a red wine originating from the Piedmont region in northwestern Italy. Officially known as Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema, the cooperative was founded in 1960 by local winegrowers. It is situated in the small municipality of Carema, close to the border of Valle d'Aosta. This area represents Alto Piemonte in its most dramatic form, where the Alps rise directly behind the vineyards. The wine was produced and bottled within the production zone by the cooperative itself and holds a Denominazione d'Origine Controllata classification.
Piedmont, which literally translates to "at the foot of the mountains," is globally recognized as one of the most prestigious wine regions, characterized by steep hills and a strong focus on terroir. Within this region, Carema stands out as one of Italy's smallest appellations, encompassing only about 18 hectares of active production. The area is renowned for its heroic mountain viticulture. The vineyards are planted on steep terraces with moraine soils at altitudes ranging from 300 to 600 meters. A defining visual feature of this alpine terroir is the traditional "pergola caremese" or "topie." In this unique vine-training system, the vines are elevated on granite pillars, allowing the canopy to spread horizontally like a green roof to maximize sun exposure in the cool climate.
This wine is crafted from Nebbiolo, an Italian top grape celebrated for producing elegant wines with significant structure. In Carema, the grape is locally referred to as Picotener or Picotendro. While Nebbiolo is widely associated with the famous Barolo and Barbaresco areas of Piedmont, the high altitude and cool alpine climate of Carema yield a distinctly different, mountain-grown expression of the grape. Produttori di Carema remains one of the central producers dedicated to preserving this specific viticultural tradition.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
