Clastidio Oltrepò Pavese Angelo Ballabio 1962
The 1962 Clastidio is a dry white wine produced by Angelo Ballabio in the Colli dell'Oltrepò Pavese. The Ballabio family has a long-standing history in winemaking, proudly noting on their labels that they have been viticulturists and oenologists from father to son since 1905. Historically, the estate also held the prestigious title of purveyor to the Duke of Aosta.
This wine originates from Oltrepò Pavese, situated south of the Po River in the southern part of Lombardy. Lombardy is a region of incredible viticultural diversity, stretching from the dramatic northern mountains to the foggy southern plains. While the region is famous for extremes such as the traditional method sparkling wines of Franciacorta and the steep, terraced vineyards of Valtellina, Oltrepò Pavese stands as one of its most crucial wine-producing areas.
Oltrepò Pavese is particularly renowned for its strong Pinot Nero identity, producing both still wines and classic method sparkling wines, alongside local specialties like Bonarda and Buttafuoco. The label of this 1962 vintage features a poetic tribute to the winemaking process, translating to: 'From your heat, oh sun, the grape fattens; and the farmer presses the desired liquor from it,' reflecting the traditional agricultural heritage of the estate.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Lombardy
Lombardy is Italy's economic engine room, but in terms of wine it is a region with an incredibly wide range - from the dramatic mountains in the north to the misty plains in the south.
The region is particularly famous for two extremes: Franciacorta, which is Italy's answer to Champagne (made in the classic method), and Valtellina in the Alps, where the Nebbiolo grape is grown on dizzyingly steep terraces under the name Chiavennasca.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
