Costières de Nîmes Domaine de la Coustille 2001
The 2001 Domaine de la Coustille is an AOC-classified wine from the Costières de Nîmes appellation in France. This particular release features a corporate logo for the Kverneland Group along with the slogan "But they still need lunch" on the label. The wine was bottled directly at the property and was aged in oak barrels.
Costières de Nîmes is the southernmost appellation in the Rhône system, situated between the Rhône delta and the Mediterranean Sea, just south of the city of Nîmes. Granted AOC status in 1986, the area covers approximately 4,000 hectares of vineyards planted on a gently rolling plateau. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters, with significant influence from both the dry, northwesterly Mistral wind and the cool Marin breeze from the Mediterranean. The terroir is defined by soils consisting mainly of large, rounded stones known as galets roulés, mixed with red clay and sand from the ancient course of the Rhône river, which provides excellent drainage and heat retention.
The broader Rhône Valley has a rich viticultural history dating back to Roman times. While the northern part of the region is known for its steep slopes, the warmer southern section focuses heavily on Grenache-based blends. In Costières de Nîmes, red wines make up about half of the total production and are predominantly crafted from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. The area is recognized as an accessible entry point into the traditional viticulture of the southern Rhône and is home to a long-standing tradition of biodynamic and organic farming.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
