Costières de Nîmes Domaine de la Grande Plantade 1999
The 1999 Domaine de la Grande Plantade is a French wine originating from the Costières de Nîmes appellation. Bottled directly at the property, this wine carries the Appellation Costières de Nîmes Contrôlée classification and has an alcohol volume of 13%.
Located in the southern Rhône Valley, south of the city of Nîmes, Costières de Nîmes is the southernmost appellation in the Rhône system. Situated between the Rhône delta and the Mediterranean Sea, the area was granted AOC status in 1986 and covers approximately 4,000 hectares of vineyards on a slightly hilly plateau. The terroir is defined by a distinct Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The vineyards are significantly influenced by both the dry northwestern Mistral wind and the cool Marin breeze blowing in from the Mediterranean.
The soils in this area are composed primarily of large, rounded stones known as galets roulés, mixed with red clay and sand from the ancient course of the Rhône river. This composition ensures excellent drainage and heat retention. The broader Rhône Valley has a rich viticultural history dating back to Roman times. While the northern part of the region is known for its steep slopes, the warmer southern section, where Costières de Nîmes is located, is characterized by a long-standing tradition of biodynamic and organic winegrowing. Red wines make up about half of the production in this appellation, traditionally utilizing grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Carignan.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
