Caramany Côtes du Roussillon Cellier des Comtes 1983
The 1983 Caramany Côtes du Roussillon is a red wine produced by Cellier des Comtes. Bottled in Perpignan by a union of local producers, this wine holds the Appellation Côtes du Roussillon Villages Contrôlée classification. As noted on the original label, the wine was carefully selected by Cellier des Comtes and traditionally raised and aged in oak barrels.
Côtes du Roussillon is an AOC located in the southernmost part of France, situated around Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales department along the Catalan border with Spain. Granted AOC status in 1977, it forms the foundation of the region's appellation hierarchy. The area is defined by a distinct Mediterranean climate, experiencing France's warmest and driest weather with over 300 days of sunshine annually. The vineyards are heavily influenced by the strong Tramontane wind from the north and the humid Marin breeze from the sea. The terroir is highly complex, featuring a diverse mix of granite, gneiss, black and brown schist, limestone, clay, and stony terraces.
The broader Roussillon region stretches from the Pyrenees down to the Mediterranean Sea, boasting its own distinct Catalan culture and identity. It is home to one of France's oldest wine cultures, characterized by steep, terraced vineyards. In this region, dry red wines like those from the Côtes du Roussillon Villages appellation are traditionally crafted from a blend of at least three grape varieties, with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre serving as the primary varieties, often supplemented by Carignan, Cinsault, and Lladoner Pelut.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Roussillon
Roussillon lies in the far south of France along the Catalan border with Spain from the Pyrenees down to the Mediterranean and, together with Languedoc, forms the larger administrative region of Languedoc-Roussillon (now part of Occitanie). The area has its own distinct Catalan culture and identity and focuses on 14 AOCs and two IGPs, grown from 24 permitted grapes.
The area produces 80 percent of France's Vins Doux Naturels (fortified sweet wines) under the appellations Banyuls, Banyuls Grand Cru, Maury, Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes, mainly from Grenache Noir, Gris and Blanc as well as Muscat. The dry wines come from Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Collioure and Maury Sec, based on Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The climate is France's warmest and driest, with steep terraced vineyards on slate, gneiss, granite and limestone. The style ranges from powerful, spicy dry reds with ripe dark berries, garrigue, liquorice and pepper, to the sweet, concentrated Banyuls wines with raisin, fig, cocoa, coffee and nuts. The area is known as home to some of the world's most distinctive fortified sweet wines and one of France's oldest wine cultures.
