Clos du Moulin Fleurie Georges Dubœuf 1996
This 1996 red wine comes from the Clos du Moulin vineyard in Fleurie, produced by Georges Dubœuf. Establishing his merchant house in 1964, Dubœuf became the most influential individual in modern Beaujolais history. He played a pivotal role in bringing international visibility to the region and its Gamay-based wines, turning the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau into a global event. Following his passing in 2020, the estate is now managed by his son, Franck Dubœuf.
The wine originates from Beaujolais, a French wine region located south of Burgundy. The area is characterized by its granite subsoil and is widely recognized as the homeland of the Gamay grape. Specifically, this wine holds the Appellation Fleurie Contrôlée classification. Fleurie is one of the ten cru villages in Beaujolais, situated on granite slopes just north of Morgon.
Produced entirely from Gamay, a classic French grape variety, this wine reflects the viticultural focus of the Beaujolais and Loire regions where the grape is most frequently cultivated. The wine was produced and bottled in France by Les Vins Georges Dubœuf, containing 13% alcohol by volume. The estate's broader portfolio covers the entire spectrum of the region, from generic appellations to the ten cru villages, helping to define the international profile of Beaujolais.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
