Garrafeira Caves Vidigal 1985 Red wine
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Leiria
Leiria lies in western Portugal between Lisbon and Coimbra and is a lesser-known but historically important wine region. The area is covered mainly by DOC Encostas de Aire, which spans limestone-rich slopes and foothills in an area moderated by the Atlantic to the west.
The climate is Atlantic-influenced with moderate temperatures, good rainfall and cool nights, and the soils consist mainly of limestone and clay, giving the wines a pronounced minerality and freshness. The white wines are made from native grapes such as Arinto, Fernão Pires, Malvasia and Tamarez, while the reds are dominated by Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez (Tempranillo) and Trincadeira. The style is typically fresh, acid-driven and slender with moderate alcohol levels; the whites show citrus, green apple, peach, white flowers and chalky minerality, while the reds have red berries, cherry, spices and fine tannins. The area is known as a producer of elegant coastal wines and as home to some of Portugal's most limestone-driven whites.
