Juliénas Domaine de la Seigneurie de Juliénas 1987
The 1987 Juliénas from Domaine de la Seigneurie de Juliénas is a French red wine originating from the Beaujolais region. The estate is owned by F. Condemine, and this vintage was bottled at the domaine by the négociant Georges Dubœuf. The wine holds the Appellation Juliénas Contrôlée classification.
Located south of Burgundy, Beaujolais is the traditional homeland of the Gamay grape. While the region gained global recognition for its early-release wines, its highest quality is found in the ten designated cru villages. Juliénas is one of these northern Beaujolais Crus, situated on the border of the southern Burgundy subregion of Mâconnais. Named after Julius Caesar, the area was granted AOC status in 1938 and covers approximately 580 hectares of hillside vineyards with mixed exposure.
The climate in Juliénas is continental, characterized by warm days and cool nights, which creates significant diurnal temperature shifts. The vineyards benefit from well-draining soils consisting primarily of granite, schist, and clay-limestone, with deep granite in the higher parcels and more alluvial compositions in the lower areas. The wine is made exclusively from Gamay, a classic French grape variety predominantly cultivated in Beaujolais and the Loire Valley. Within the spectrum of Beaujolais Crus, Juliénas is recognized as a quality-oriented appellation that produces structured wines, positioned stylistically between the lighter crus and the most robust ones.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
