Duc de Foix Penedès Covides 2004
The Duc de Foix Penedès 2004 is a red wine produced and bottled by Covides. It originates from the Penedès area within Catalonia, a dynamic wine region located in northeastern Spain along the Mediterranean coast. Catalonia features a predominantly Mediterranean climate with continental traits inland, and its soils vary from chalk and clay to slate and granite. Penedès is one of the region's ten official Denominación de Origen (DO) areas, contributing to Catalonia's reputation as one of Spain's most diverse wine-producing regions.
Classified as a Denominación de Origen, this wine is specifically crafted as a "Tinto Joven," or young red wine. The blend is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon is globally recognized for producing structured red wines and is traditionally cultivated in regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. Merlot, another classic blue grape, is frequently grown in similar regions as well as Northern Italy. Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is prominently found in the Rhône Valley and Australia. Together, these varieties form the foundation of this 2004 vintage, which is bottled at 12.5% alcohol.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Catalonien
Catalonia lies in north-eastern Spain along the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees in the north to Tarragona in the south and, together with Barcelona, forms one of Spain's most dynamic wine regions. The area contains 10 official DOs, including Penedès, Empordà, Costers del Segre, Conca de Barberà, Terra Alta, Montsant, Pla de Bages, Tarragona and Alella, as well as the prestigious DOQ Priorat with Spain's highest quality classification.
The climate is predominantly Mediterranean with continental features inland, and the soils range from limestone and clay to slate (llicorella) and granite. The area is home to Cava, Spain's traditional-method sparkling wine, produced mainly in Penedès from Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada. The red wines are made from Garnacha, Cariñena, Tempranillo and international varieties, while the whites are dominated by the traditional Cava grapes and Chardonnay. The style ranges from fresh sparkling wines to powerful, concentrated reds from Priorat with mineral graphite and ripe dark berries. The area is known as the home of Cava and one of Spain's most diverse wine regions.
