Sacile Riserva La Vinicola Marchesini 1966 Pinot Grigio
This 1966 Sacile Riserva is a white wine produced by La Vinicola Marchesini, under the title Premiate Cantine Cav. Mario Marchesini. Crafted from Pinot Grigio—the Italian name for Pinot Gris, which is typically cultivated in Northern Italy and California—this wine was bottled with an alcohol content of 13.2% in a 720ml format. It carries the historical classification "Vino Tipico della Zona Riserva," a broader regional designation widely used before the modern Italian DOC system was fully established.
The wine originates from Sacile, a historic wine-producing area in the western part of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Situated along the banks of the Livenza river near the Veneto border and at the foot of the Carnic Prealps, the town is traditionally known as the "Garden of the Serenissima" due to its Venetian architecture. Historically, Sacile was part of the Udine province, a detail often noted on older wine labels from the era, before being transferred to the Pordenone province in 1968.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is widely regarded as Italy's absolute top center for white wine. The region benefits from a unique geographical position where the Alps shield the vineyards from cold northern winds, while the Adriatic Sea introduces mild air from the south. The vineyards around Sacile share this balanced climate and feature alluvial soils consisting primarily of stones, gravel, and sand deposited by rivers over millennia. This stony soil, locally referred to as "magredi" or "grave," provides efficient drainage and reflects the sun's heat up toward the vines. Today, this terroir is part of the broader official Friuli Grave DOC appellation.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Friuli-Venezia Giulia (often just called Friuli) is considered by many to be Italy's absolute top center for white wine.
Geographically, the region is unique: the Alps shield against cold northerly winds, while the Adriatic Sea sends mild air in from the south. It creates a perfect climate for both crisp white wines such as Pinot Grigio and the complex, stomach-fermented "orange wines" for which the region is world famous.
