Reisling Spätlese Striehl 1966 Rheingau
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Rheingau
The Rheingau lies in the German state of Hesse along the northern bank of the Rhine, where the river runs west rather than north for a 30-kilometre stretch, giving the south-facing slopes ideal growing conditions. The area is one of Germany's most historic and prestigious wine regions with around 3,200 hectares, sheltered from northerly winds by the Taunus mountains and reflecting heat from the river.
Riesling dominates with over 78 percent (the highest share of any German wine region), complemented by around 12 percent Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), especially around Assmannshausen. The soils are highly varied with slate, quartzite, sandstone, clay, loess and limestone. The area has historically pioneered German quality wine and was home to the discovery of both the Spätlese style (1775 at Schloss Johannisberg) and later Auslese. The wines classically have an intense but elegant structure with peach, apricot, citrus, apple, honey, herbal character and a pronounced slate-influenced minerality, while the sweet Prädikat wines develop waxy honey, dried apricot and petrol notes with age. The area is known as the spiritual home of Riesling and one of the world's finest white wine regions.
