Carta de Oro Rioja Reserva 2001
Carta de Oro Rioja Reserva 2001 is a red wine from the renowned Rioja region in northern Spain. Rioja is the country's most famous wine region, with a modern history heavily shaped by French winemakers in the 19th century. The 2001 vintage is recognized as a top vintage in the area, described as classic and structured, and it achieved a score of 94 points. As a Denominación de Origen Calificada Reserva, this limited production wine reflects the traditional classification system of the region.
The wine is produced by Berberana, a historic estate founded in 1877 by Don Miguel Martínez Berberana in Ollauri, a small mountain village in Rioja Alta. Berberana was part of the first pioneer generation of Rioja wineries that shaped the modern identity of Spanish wine, drawing clear inspiration from French winemakers who had fled the phylloxera disaster in Bordeaux. In 1975, the production moved from Ollauri to Cenicero, reflecting the general post-war expansion of the Rioja region as many original houses outgrew their village roots. Today, the Berberana name has deep historical roots in Rioja while also covering a broader geographical area across Spanish wine country.
The blend consists of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. Tempranillo is Spain's most significant and widely planted red grape variety, with genetic research indicating it is a natural cross between Albillo Mayor and Benedicto. The thick-skinned grape thrives best in a warm Mediterranean climate, particularly in higher altitude areas with chalky and clay soils where cool nights extend the growing season. Its name derives from the Spanish word "temprano," meaning early, referring to its tendency to ripen several weeks before many other Spanish varieties. Following the traditional methods of the region, this Reserva was aged for 24 months in American oak barrels.
