Mesa Mayor Rioja Alavesa Covila
Mesa Mayor is a 13% ABV red wine produced by Covila, a winery situated in the Rioja Alavesa area of Spain. Covila was founded in 1989 as a cooperative effort by 64 viticulturists who collectively cultivate over 250 hectares of vineyards. The estate utilizes advanced facilities to craft a variety of wines and maintains a cellar of 1,200 barrels dedicated to the aging process of their Crianzas and Reservas.
The wine originates from Rioja Alavesa, located in the Basque section of Rioja just north of the Ebro river. As one of the three official zones within the Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) Rioja, this area is positioned near the Sierra de Cantabria. The local terroir is defined by its calcareous soils, elevated altitudes, and cool nights. This specific zone plays a significant role in the production of both modern terroir-driven wines and classic Rioja expressions.
Rioja stands as Spain's most renowned wine region, with a modern winemaking history heavily influenced by French vintners during the 19th century. The region's production is traditionally centered around the Tempranillo grape, which is frequently blended with Garnacha. A defining feature of Rioja's viticultural identity is its classification system based on oak barrel aging, categorizing wines into Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva designations.
The history of the wine

Rioja
Rioja in northern Spain is the country's most famous wine region with a modern wine history shaped by French winemakers in the 19th century. Tempranillo is the main grape, often blended with Garnacha, and the wines are defined by their aging in oak barrels, classified as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. The result is soft, mature red wines with red berries, vanilla, leather and spice.
