The 1990 Château Maurens is a red wine from the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation in France. Bottled directly at the estate with an alcohol content of 12.5%, this wine comes from a vintage that achieved a score of 97 points, noted for its great ripeness and balance.
The wine originates from Bordeaux, located near the Atlantic coast. Recognized as the world's most famous wine region, Bordeaux has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages and is celebrated for producing elegant blended wines of great finesse. While the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon grown on gravel soils, the Right Bank is the traditional domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is an independent appellation on the Right Bank that covers the same geographical area as regular Saint-Émilion but enforces stricter production regulations. These rules mandate lower yields of 40 hectoliters per hectare, a higher minimum alcohol content, and a mandatory maturation period of 20 months. The area spans 5,400 hectares across eight communes surrounding the medieval town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. The vineyards are planted on a diverse patchwork of limestone plateaus, limestone-clay slopes, gravel, and sandy soils, providing the foundation for wines primarily based on Merlot, accompanied by Cabernet Franc and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
