Sardinian Gold Vernaccia di Oristano Cantina Sociale Vernaccia Oristano 1976
The 1976 Sardinian Gold Vernaccia di Oristano is a dry fortified wine produced by Cantina Sociale Vernaccia Oristano. It originates from the island of Sardinia, a region that differs significantly from the Italian mainland. The island's geography is raw, characterized by granite and limestone, with vineyards stretching from the windswept coasts to the wild, mountainous interior known as Barbagia. This specific wine holds a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) classification, representing Sardinia's very first DOC, which was established in 1971.
The wine is made exclusively from the Vernaccia di Oristano grape, an ancient white variety native to the Tirso river valley in western Sardinia. The name likely derives from the Latin word "vernaculus," meaning local or native. Archaeological discoveries of grape seeds in the area indicate that this variety, or its ancestors, has been cultivated on the island for millennia. Today, it is grown almost exclusively in the province of Oristano, where it thrives in the sandy and alluvial soils of the river valley. While it historically played a major role in local wine production, the total planted area has decreased significantly since the 1970s, dropping from over 1,500 hectares to just a few hundred today.
Vernaccia di Oristano is renowned for its traditional, oxidative production method. The grape must is fermented and left to mature in small oak or chestnut barrels. Crucially, these barrels are only partially filled, which allows a protective layer of flor yeast to form on the surface of the wine. This historical technique is central to the region's winemaking and shares similarities with the methods used to produce the renowned Sherry wines of Jerez. The resulting fortified wine is bottled at 18% alcohol by volume.
