Somlo Var Muskat-Ottonel Ausbruch 1973 Dessert wine
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Balaton
Balaton is a combined wine area around Lake Balaton in western Hungary and is one of the country's most important wine regions, with several subregions along the lake's northern and southern shores. The area includes Badacsony, Balatonfüred-Csopak, Balatonfelvidék and Balatonboglár, where the soils range from basalt and volcanic deposits in the north to loess and sandy soils in the south.
The climate is moderated by the lake, which reflects light and stores heat, giving long, even growing seasons. White wines dominate and are made from native grapes such as Olaszrizling, Furmint, Kéknyelű, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) and Juhfark, supplemented by smaller amounts of red wine from Kékfrankos. The style is typically acid-driven and mineral with citrus, apple, peach, white flowers, herbs and a pronounced volcanic, stony character. The area is known as Hungary's classic white wine region and home to tradition-rich volcanic wines.
