Mazér Valtellina Nino Negri 2003
The 2003 Mazér Valtellina is a red wine produced by Nino Negri within the Valtellina Superiore Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. The name "Mazér" translates to good, beautiful, and generous in the local dialect, and the production of this specific wine first began in 1996. It originates from Lombardy, a region recognized as Italy's economic engine, which encompasses a diverse landscape ranging from foggy southern plains to dramatic northern mountains.
Valtellina is situated in northern Lombardy near the Swiss border, following the Adda valley through an alpine environment characterized by steep terraces. This area is highly regarded for cultivating the Nebbiolo grape, known locally as Chiavennasca. The Mazér is made exclusively from 100 percent Chiavennasca grapes, grown using a modified Guyot system on loose, sandy loam soils. The yield is strictly limited to 70 quintals per hectare.
The harvest takes place in late October. Following a careful sorting process, the grapes are placed in a drying room for a slight drying phase. Fermentation occurs at temperatures between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius. The aging process is divided into two distinct methods: 70 percent of the wine rests in steel before maturing in large oak barrels for 24 months, while the remaining 30 percent ferments and matures in small oak barrels for 15 months. The wine is subsequently refined in the bottle, resulting in a final alcohol content of 13.5 percent.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Lombardy
Lombardy is Italy's economic engine room, but in terms of wine it is a region with an incredibly wide range - from the dramatic mountains in the north to the misty plains in the south.
The region is particularly famous for two extremes: Franciacorta, which is Italy's answer to Champagne (made in the classic method), and Valtellina in the Alps, where the Nebbiolo grape is grown on dizzyingly steep terraces under the name Chiavennasca.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
