Is Arenas Baratili S. Pietro Sella & Mosca 1963
The 1963 Is Arenas is a white wine from the historic Sella & Mosca estate. Founded in 1899 by two Piedmontese men, engineer Erminio Sella and lawyer Edgardo Mosca, the winery is located near Alghero on the northwestern coast of Sardinia. It grew into one of Europe's largest single estates, covering over 600 hectares. While the wine was produced by Silvio Carta in Baratili San Pietro, it was aged and bottled by Sella & Mosca.
The wine originates from Baratili San Pietro, a municipality in the Oristano province on Sardinia's west coast. Situated in the Campidano plain near the Sinis peninsula and the lower Tirso river valley, the area features a flat landscape with sandy and alluvial soils. This geography stands in contrast to the broader Sardinian terrain, which is typically rugged and characterized by granite and limestone.
Crafted exclusively from Vernaccia di Oristano, an ancient grape native to the Tirso river valley, the variety's name likely derives from the Latin word vernaculus, meaning local or indigenous. Today, the grape is grown almost exclusively in the Oristano province, though its cultivation has become increasingly rare, with the total planted area dropping from over 1,500 hectares in the 1970s to just a few hundred hectares today. The winemaking process relies on traditional, oxidative methods. The grapes are harvested late in the autumn using characteristic glazed terracotta basins. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes prolonged aging in partially filled barrels made of local chestnut or oak. This technique allows a protective layer of flor yeast to form on the surface, a central element of the historical winemaking practices in the region.
