Sogno di Bacco Umberto Fiore 1976
The Sogno di Bacco 1976 is a red wine produced by Umberto Fiore, a historical and now inactive producer whose name is closely tied to the layered history of Alto Piemonte. Operating out of Gattinara, Umberto Fiore was part of a vibrant wine culture of small producers in the 20th century before urbanization and generational shifts changed the landscape. Today, only older vintages from this producer remain.
This Vino da Tavola originates from Piemonte in northwestern Italy, a prestigious wine region literally translating to "at the foot of the mountain." Surrounded by the Alps, the area is renowned for its dramatic, steep hills and a strong focus on terroir. In the northern part of Piemonte, specifically around Gattinara, the cooler climate and higher altitude create a distinct environment. The volcanic soils, rich in porphyry, granite, and iron, heavily influence the grapes grown on the sunny local hillsides. The region is also characterized by thick autumn morning fog, which protects the vineyards and allows for a long, steady ripening period.
Wines from this producer in this area were traditionally crafted from Nebbiolo, known locally as Spanna. The production of the Sogno di Bacco involved a late harvest to ensure the grapes reached complete maturation. Following the harvest, the wine underwent a natural aging process in Slavonian oak barrels for a minimum of five years in the producer's aging cellars in Gattinara before being bottled at 12.5% alcohol.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
